Geelong is unusual in having two airports within reach. Avalon is on the city’s doorstep, and Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine is about an hour up the freeway. The right choice depends on more than distance.
The case for Avalon
- It’s about 20 to 25 minutes from central Geelong, and less from Lara and Corio
- The terminal is small, so the walk from the kerb to the gate is short
- A shorter transfer costs less and means a later alarm
The case for Melbourne Airport
- Far more destinations and departure times, domestic and international
- More choice of airlines and fares
- More options if a flight is cancelled and you need to rebook
How to decide
Compare the whole trip, not just the airfare. Add the transfer cost and the travel time at both ends, then look at the flight times. A cheaper fare from Melbourne can cost more overall once you count the longer transfer, and a flight from Avalon at an awkward hour can cost you half a day.
If the flight you want leaves from both airports, Avalon is usually the easier day. If it only leaves from Melbourne, plan the drive properly and the trip is still straightforward.
We drive to both airports at any hour. Tell us the flight and we’ll quote either run. See airport transfers for what the service includes.
