The drive from central Geelong to Melbourne Airport is a little over 80 kilometres and takes roughly an hour when the road is clear. The road is not always clear, so the useful question is how much margin to build in.
Work backwards from the flight
Start with your departure time and subtract the time you want at the terminal. Airlines commonly suggest arriving one to two hours before a domestic flight and around three hours before an international one. Check your airline’s own bag-drop cut-off, because that is the deadline that matters.
Then subtract the drive, then a margin for traffic.
When the road is slow
- Weekday mornings heading towards Melbourne, roughly 6.30am to 9am
- Weekday afternoons, roughly 3.30pm to 6.30pm
- Friday afternoons and the start of school holidays
- Any time there is roadwork or an incident on the Princes Freeway or the Western Ring Road
In those windows, allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes. Very early flights are the easy ones: at 4am the run is quick and predictable.
Where you start matters
From Lara or Corio you are already near the freeway, and the trip is closer to 45 to 55 minutes. From Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads or Point Lonsdale, add 30 to 40 minutes to the central Geelong figure.
A worked example
Take a 9.00am domestic flight with checked bags, leaving from Belmont on a weekday. You want to be at the terminal by 7.00am. Allow 70 minutes for the drive and 20 for traffic, and your pickup is 5.30am.
